THE SHOULDER
The Shoulder was founded in 1988 as a Christian, 12-Step
based, 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation. Physicians and other
members of the community recognized the need for a substance
abuse treatment center in South Alabama which would serve
those with low or no income. These individuals raised funds
primarily from the local community to buy an abandoned Holiday
Inn near Spanish Fort, Ala.
From 1988 to 2005, The Shoulder operated on Battleship
Parkway between Mobile and Baldwin Counties, Ala.
Executive Director Phillip Drane has served in the same capacity
since August 1988.
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed nearly every
tangible object owned by The Shoulder, including the 38,000
square foot building.
As the only residential treatment center in Baldwin County, the
State of Alabama recognized the severe need for the
continuation of The Shoulder’s program, and offered a temporary
solution.
In September 2005, The Shoulder staff began renovating a
partially-abandoned, state-owned building in Daphne, Ala.
The Shoulder programs re-opened to clients on Oct. 3, 2005 in
that facility, and we continue in operation in the same temporary
quarters. Plans are currently underway for a new, permanent
facility in the same general area.
In March 2007, The Shoulder sold its property on the Causeway
in anticipation of rebuilding in a safer location.
The Shoulder is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. We have to rebuild in the next year. Won't you make a tax-deductible donation today?
