Intensive Outpatient Program
With A Partial Residential
Component

This is our primary program, which is a minimum of eight weeks in length. This program enables the
individual to both reside at The Shoulder during treatment and remain employed at the same time.
This residential program provides both room and board, which includes three meals a day.

Program fees are on sliding scale based on the client’s income. There is a $600 non-refundable fee
due upon admission which covers testing, a medical history and physical, and administrative costs.  A
payment of at least $200 per week is expected from each client. This payment is applied toward total
IOP program fees.

The primary focus is on recovery from drugs and alcohol. Treatment activities are Monday through
Friday, and begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. While a client is a resident at The Shoulder, counselors work
with him to develop a treatment plan designed to address his individual needs. The client attends
numerous educational and process groups, 12-step meetings, spirituality groups, substance
education meetings, and individual and family counseling sessions.

Random drug and alcohol testing is done to insure that The Shoulder provides a safe environment
for all clients.

While participating in The Shoulder’s program, a client is required to obtain and maintain full-time (40
hours per week) employment. This is an important component in helping a client resume his place in
society as a responsible individual. Clients may work Monday through Saturday, but they may not
work on Sundays. IOP clients must return to The Shoulder by
5:00 p.m.

If a client comes to The Shoulder without a job, he has 10 days in which to obtain  employment.
Clients are responsible for their own transportation to and from work. If a client does not have a car
or license, there is limited bus service, carpools, and numerous businesses within easy walking,
bicycling and driving distance from The Shoulder’s facility.

If a client is on site while waiting for a job, he is expected to perform therapeutic activity during
working hours.

Weekend passes are an earned privilege given at the discretion of the counselor when it is in the
best interest of the client.

The Shoulder strongly encourages family participation in the treatment process. Loved ones may
attend a group just for them on
Mondays from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. There is no charge to go to this
process group.

Family group, during which loved ones and clients meet together, is held every
Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. Family members should also consider attending community
Al-Anon Family Group and Co-Dependents Anonymous meetings to further their understanding of
addiction.

Residential Rehabilitation

Men who are admitted into The Shoulder Halfway House must first have completed a primary
treatment program either at The Shoulder or in an equivalent certified program at another facility.
Clients who intend to enter our Halfway House program must coordinate it with their primary treatment
counselor several weeks prior to their proposed discharge. This allows referrals, applications and
acceptances to be made well in advance of the proposed transition. Transfers from other programs
are welcome. However, these transfers must be pre-approved by our counseling staff, and door-to-
door.

Residency in our Halfway Program requires a minimum eight-week commitment. Generally, the
optimal stay is about 90 days. Stays longer than 90 days will be considered by clinical staff based on
the therapeutic value and available space.

For those entering the Halfway Program from another facility, there is a $600 non-refundable fee due
upon admission. This fee is necessary to cover administrative costs, physical and psychosocial
assessments, phone calls, etc. After acceptance to the program all clients will be required to pay
$200 per week in Halfway treatment fees.

The primary focus at The Shoulder is on the recovery from drugs and alcohol. It is a structured
environment, which includes nightly curfews and random drug and alcohol testing. The privilege of
weekend passes may be earned as dictated by the client's involvement in the recovery process and
his responsible behavior.

Halfway Program clients attend weekly Aftercare and Life Skills groups in the evenings, in addition to
numerous 12-step meetings, spirituality groups, and individual sessions on an as-needed basis.
Counselors work with clients to develop rehabilitation plans to address such issues as relapse
prevention, legal issues, vocation, and education. Referrals will be made as necessary.

While participating in Halfway Program, a client is required to obtain and maintain full-time (40 hours
per week) employment. This is an important part of helping a client resume his place in society as a
responsible individual. Clients may work Monday through Saturday, but they may not work on
Sundays. The evenings will be dedicated to recovery activities.

If a client comes to The Shoulder without a job, he has 10 days in which obtain employment. Clients
are responsible for their own transportation to and from work. If a client does not have a car or
license, there is limited bus service, carpools, and numerous businesses within easy walking,
bicycling and driving distance from The Shoulder’s facility.
