Alabama Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb
Sue Bell Cobb, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama,
will lend her support to the upcoming August fundraiser for The
Shoulder.
She made Alabama history in 2007 as the first female Chief
Justice. Justice Cobb also understands the importance and benefit
of providing help to those afflicted by addiction.
In her first year of office, she established the Model Drug
Court Task Commission. In January 2007, there were 18 drug
courts in the state. Now there are 38, with 26 more in the planning
stages. Her goal is to establish drug courts in every county. She
wants to see offenders have the opportunity to obtain treatment,
instead of taking up space in prison.
“We want the non-violent offenders who have committed
offenses while under the influence of alcohol and drugs to be given
the meaningful opportunity to turn their lives around,” Justice
Cobb said. “Drug courts are the single best way of protecting the
public,” she said. They save millions of taxpayer dollars, doing the
hard work of fixing people instead of the easier work of filling
prisons.”
The Shoulder serves as the residential treatment facility of
choice for the new Baldwin County Drug Court , established in
October 2007. Executive Director Phillip Drane serves on the state
Model Drug Court Task Commission.
